Bewdley-based darts player Luke Woodhouse is set to compete on the global stage next week, yet he continues to participate in games at his neighborhood pub. The 36-year-old Woodhouse is scheduled to compete in the PDC World Darts Championship at London’s Alexandra Palace this Monday. Nevertheless, he frequently still plays for his former team at The Waggon and Horses. He stated, “It’s brilliant, I’ve played with the same sort of team, the same mates, for 18 years.” Having accumulated prize money totaling just under £250,000 over the last two years, Woodhouse holds the 35th position in the PDC world rankings. On Monday, he is scheduled to compete against Lourence Ilagan from the Philippines in the opening round of the World Championships. Should he advance, he could encounter more formidable opponents, including two other players named Luke: current champion Luke Humphries and Luke Littler, the 2024 runner-up, whose initial appearance at 16 years old made a significant impact on the darts community. Woodhouse, who previously achieved his best performance at the World Championships four years prior by reaching the last 32, described the tournament as unparalleled. He commented, “Everyone knows that it’s the biggest tournament of the year,” adding, “It’s the one that can change your life if you have a good run in it.” He further remarked, “I think being at Christmas as well… it’s all sold out and it’s just a really special tournament.” While Alexandra Palace might be significant to Woodhouse, the pub where he developed his skills also holds considerable importance. He confessed, “I probably feel more pressure playing in a pub than I do on the stage at the World Championships, to be honest.” He explained, “Everyone expects you to play well and sometimes it doesn’t happen.” He elaborated, “For some reason having 10, 15 people watching you on one board is more nerve-wracking than having thousands behind you watching you.” The PDC World Championships are scheduled to commence on Sunday, with the championship final taking place on 3 January.
