Former Saints defender Francis Benali stated that Southampton’s second-half display during their Carabao Cup quarter-final loss to Liverpool on Wednesday presents certain “positives” for the individual who will succeed Russell Martin as manager. While under the interim leadership of Simon Rusk, Southampton initially delivered a lacklustre first 45 minutes, subsequently showing improvement following halftime by scoring a goal and pressing intensely for a late equaliser. Benali conveyed to the Football Daily podcast, “There is the frustration of going out of a cup competition at this stage but there are positives they can and should take from the second half.” He further added, “There was very much an element of going through the motions in the first half. It was very dominant from Liverpool even with the changes that they made.” Benali emphasized, “For Southampton, the focus is clearly now back on Premier League survival and the appointment of a new manager who the team behind the scenes at St Mary’s need to get in quickly.” He continued, “This is a position that needs to be filled as soon as possible because whoever is coming in needs time to work with the squad to try and stay up this season.” Benali concluded by stating, “There is a huge amount of work to be done.” The complete episode is available for listening on BBC Sounds.
