A series of historical events is scheduled for a town that hosted big band leader Glenn Miller, where he performed and resided during World War Two. The Glenn Miller Memorial Weekend, taking place in Bedford, will commemorate the 80th anniversary of his final departure from RAF Twinwood Airfield in nearby Clapham, after which he was never seen again. According to organiser Sallie Phillips, the event commemorates what she described as the “friendly invasion of the Americans” who arrived in the region bringing “their music, chewing gum, peanut butter, stockings and chocolate.” An anniversary service is scheduled for Sunday at the Twinwood Aviation Museum, precisely at 13:55 GMT, which was the exact departure time of Miller’s flight. Ms. Phillips, who organized the event for Bedford Borough Council, stated that the town “had never seen anything like it before” during Miller’s time there. She further expressed, “The weekend is a commemoration, but I do hope it will be a celebration of the music that that he bought, the arrival of the Americans, the friendly invasion, with their music, their chewing gum, their peanut butter, stockings and chocolate.” She continued, “Celebrating that musical culture, that lifts your spirits, that’s really what Glenn Miller was all about. “American GIs were encouraged to host and go to dances as music was really part of the effort to win the war.”” Ms. Phillips added, “This is a good opportunity to bring some of that back and to remind people of just what it did for the town.” Events will be held at Harpur Square and Harpur Suite within the town on both Saturday and Sunday. The schedule features The Glenn Miller Memorial Dance on Saturday evening, walking guided history tours offered on both days, complimentary dance classes, a tea dance, and historical exhibits.
