A local authority has rescheduled its Christmas lights switch-on ceremony due to anticipated adverse weather conditions. Bedford Borough Council confirmed that the town’s festive activities will now commence at 10:00 GMT on Saturday, November 30, which is one week later than initially planned. The decision follows forecasts indicating that Storm Bert, the second named storm of the season, is expected to deliver snow, rain, and powerful winds to various parts of the UK this weekend. Conservative mayor, Tom Wootton, conveyed that the council was “incredibly disappointed” by the postponement but stressed that the safety of those attending had to be the primary consideration. He added, “Given the current weather forecast, it would be irresponsible to proceed with an outdoor event that could potentially be unsafe.” The council acknowledged that some families might find the news “upsetting” but reassured the public by stating: “Christmas will still shine bright in Bedford”.
