A woman who provides her beach hut for free use by cancer patients expressed her surprise at receiving national recognition, stating she “never in a million years” anticipated such an honor. Jayn Willis undertook the renovation of the seaside cabin, located in Walton-on-the-Naze, Essex, a year following the 2021 death of her daughter, Gemma, from cervical cancer. The remarkable transformation of the structure garnered attention from the Love Your Hut website, leading its judges to name it their “hut of the year.” Alexandra Sandberg, the awards organiser, commented that Ms Willis’s narrative deeply affected everyone involved. Sandberg stated: “The loving story – the sad story – moved us all really deeply and it was a landslide of a win.” Situated on Southcliff Promenade, the hut was characterized as a “beautiful sanctuary” created in memory of Gemma, who passed away at the age of 30. Ms Willis revealed that the inspiration for the hut came from her daughter’s preferred locations in the United States: Palm Beach, Florida, and Beverly Hills in Los Angeles. She makes the hut available to individuals receiving cancer treatment who require a respite, a practice initially reported by the Clacton and Frinton Gazette. Regarding the award, Ms Willis remarked: “I never in a million years expected anything like this to happen.” She further explained: “We purchased the hut in Gemma’s memory and because we wanted to gift it out to other cancer patients… Just for them to get away from everyday life.” The beach hut features a paint scheme of green and white stripes, complemented by flamingos and extensive use of pink. Judges commended Ms Willis for the “intricate detail” and interior design of the hut. She also stated: “We’re delighted that it has helped many people suffering from cancer.” Ms Willis concluded: “For us as a family it has been the perfect spot to indulge in the memories of our amazing daughter.” For updates on Essex news, follow BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X.
