A five-member team from BBC Suffolk has concluded its participation in the “Thousand Mile challenge,” a fundraising initiative for BBC Children in Need. The participants, identified as journalists George King, Cleah Hetherington, and Stuart Howells, along with Look East reporter Zoie O’Brien and producer Isaac Chenery, individually swam one mile daily over a five-day period at Crown Pools in Ipswich. Initiated on Monday, the challenge involved BBC radio presenters swimming at various local pools throughout the UK, collectively covering a total distance of 1,000 miles, equivalent to 64,000 lengths of a 25m pool. The team gathered on Friday to complete their final lengths, receiving encouragement from BBC Suffolk breakfast presenter Wayne Bavin and Pudsey bear. George, affiliated with BBC News Online, stated, “It’s got harder and harder as it’s gone on.” He added, “As soon as we got into the pool it started to dawn on us how difficult it was going to be, but I feel really good that we’ve reached the end, and really proud of us all that we’ve helped raise tens of thousands of pounds for Children in Need.” Zoie commented that she had rediscovered her enthusiasm for swimming and expressed surprise that completing numerous lengths consecutively had ultimately felt “pretty good.” Isaac Chenery, a breakfast show producer, confessed to insufficient preparation, having assumed his half marathon training “would get him through.” He explained, “It was tougher than I expected.” He further remarked, “I am glad we’ve finished, and it’s phenomenal to think of where that money will go, and what it will do.” The nationwide swimming event has already accumulated over £70,000, with information on how to contribute available on the challenge’s official website.
