A man who proposed to his girlfriend during a basketball game stated that the couple “shot memories for a lifetime.” Carlo Vidal Miranda, a Peruvian national, proposed to his girlfriend of two years, Dianelis Feria-Menes, a Cuban national, during an interval at the Sheffield Sharks’ game against the Leicester Riders on Sunday. Mr. Vidal Miranda, 27, knelt down as Ms. Feria-Menes, 25, participated in a shoot-out challenge at the conclusion of the third quarter. He expressed being “very, very nervous” regarding the proposal in front of nearly 1,600 attendees but felt “very, very ecstatic” following her acceptance. Mr. Vidal Miranda, who works as a business manager for a property developer, stated that he and Ms. Feria-Menes, who met in Sheffield and currently reside together in the city centre, attended the game because they were “big fans of everything Sheffield-related.” “We have always been connected to Sheffield in some way,” he further commented. The timing of the proposal at the game was a crucial factor in his decision. He explained, “She’s going to graduate from Sheffield Hallam University on Friday, so her parents have actually come over all the way from Cuba.” “I wanted to make sure that they were able to be there. For me, it was very special for her to be completely unaware that it was something that was going to happen,” he added. With assistance from the club, Mr. Vidal Miranda organized for himself and his girlfriend, who is a nurse, to participate in a shoot-out challenge, providing him an opportunity to surprise her. He confessed that his nervousness was so intense he could not recall her affirmative response, but he has since received confirmation that she accepted. “That’s what made it special, taking that leap of faith,” he concluded. Ms. Feria-Menes stated that she was “in shock” upon turning around and seeing her now-fiancĂ© kneeling. She remarked, “I wasn’t expecting anything. I’m very, very happy. I’m still in shock.” Yuri Matischen, director of the Sheffield Sharks, reported that the Canon Medical Arena had “erupted” when Ms. Feria-Menes accepted the proposal. “We would love to offer our congratulations,” he stated, adding, “It was our first on-court engagement, which we were delighted with.” The newly engaged couple celebrated with pizza after the game and have already scheduled their wedding for 21 December. Ms. Feria-Menes characterized her fiancĂ© as her best friend, stating, “Carlo means everything to me. I know he’s the one.” Carlo further commented, “We shot memories for a lifetime.” For additional content, highlights from South Yorkshire are available on BBC Sounds, the latest episode of Look North can be viewed, or stories for potential coverage can be submitted.
