Following the passing of Barrhead Travel founder Bill Munro at 80 years old, commendations have been expressed. The entrepreneur passed away on Saturday at his residence in Lanarkshire, having experienced illness since the summer months. Mr. Munro established his company in East Renfrewshire in 1975, identifying an unfulfilled demand for a travel agency operating during evenings and weekends. The business subsequently grew to employ hundreds of individuals and operate dozens of outlets across Scotland, England, and Northern Ireland. He was recognized for providing a “transformational impact” to the travel industry. A spokesperson for Barrhead Travel stated: “His bold vision fundamentally changed the landscape for high street travel agents across the country. He made a tremendous contribution to the overall travel industry as well as becoming an influential figure within the Scottish business community.” A representative from the Scottish Passenger Agents’ Association commented: “Bill’s colleagues in the Scottish travel industry are all saddened by the news of his death. Bill had an invaluable and transformational impact on the travel industry and his legacy is evident in the Scottish travel sector today. He will be profoundly missed by all who knew him.” His daughter, Sharon, assumed leadership of the company in 2007, though he maintained a presence within the agency. In 2014, he drew criticism after dispatching a letter to employees opposing Scottish independence, which he subsequently emphasized represented his personal viewpoint and not that of the company. Barrhead was acquired in 2018 by the American corporation Travel Leaders Group, at which point Mr. Munro assumed an advisory position within the organization. Nevertheless, this role concluded contentiously later the same year when he was terminated, subsequently receiving an unfair dismissal pay-out. He is survived by his wife, Susan; his daughters, Sharon and Wendy; and his grandchildren, Ross and Hannah.
