Historically, Barcelona has secured victory in 103 out of 177 La Liga matches contested against their city rivals, Espanyol. Under the management of Hansi Flick, La Liga frontrunners Barcelona extended their impressive early-season performance by decisively defeating city rivals Espanyol, thereby establishing a nine-point lead over Real Madrid. Following their dominant victory against Real in last week’s El Clasico fixture, Barcelona’s offensive strategy was periodically exceptional, with adolescent winger Lamine Yamal again demonstrating superior skill compared to his peers. Yamal delivered an exquisite cross using the outside of his boot, which Dani Olmo subsequently converted into the 12th-minute opening goal after it deflected off the crossbar. Eleven minutes later, Marc Casado, another promising young player, provided an equally precise pass behind the Espanyol defensive line, enabling captain Raphinha to perfectly time his run and slot the ball into the net. On the defensive end, Barcelona’s notably high defensive line again created tense moments, as Espanyol had two goals disallowed due to marginal offside decisions. Full-back Omar el Hilali set up Jofre Carreras for a shot that was ultimately nullified by the video assistant referee (VAR). Shortly thereafter, Olmo secured his second goal with a powerful strike from the perimeter of the box, extending Barcelona’s lead to 3-0. At the beginning of the second half, Alvaro Tejero’s attempt for the visiting team was also disallowed following another tight offside determination. However, captain Javi Puado scored at the far post 18 minutes into the second half, narrowing the goal difference. While Espanyol showed improvement as Barcelona became less aggressive, the team positioned fourth from the bottom remained inferior for the duration of the match, perpetuating their poor derby performance. They have now endured 27 consecutive derby matches against Barcelona without a victory and have suffered defeat in six of their last seven La Liga fixtures. Under the German coach, Flick’s squad has triumphed in 11 of their 12 league encounters, and since their only defeat against Osasuna at the close of September, they have achieved six consecutive wins across all competitions, accumulating 24 goals. On Wednesday, they are scheduled to play Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League, aiming to sustain their impressive streak of results. Earlier on Sunday, Atletico Madrid, currently in third place, defeated Las Palmas 2-0, bringing them within one point of Real in the league standings.
