Bangladesh secured a decisive 154-run victory against Ireland in the opening One Day International (ODI) at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium. Bangladesh posted 252 for 4 wickets in their allotted 50 overs, with Sharmin Akhter scoring 96 and Fargana Hoque Pinky contributing 61. Sargent took 2 wickets for 51 runs for Ireland. In response, Ireland was bowled out for 98 runs in 28.5 overs. Sarah Forbes was Ireland’s top scorer with 25 runs, while Laura Delany added 22. Nahida Akter and Sultana Khatun were the leading bowlers for Bangladesh, both taking 3 wickets for 23 runs. The Irish team suffered a 154-run loss to Bangladesh in Mirpur, marking the first of a three-match ODI series. Chasing a target of 253 runs, the visiting side was dismissed for a total of 98, with their last five wickets falling for just 14 runs. Sarah Forbes led Ireland’s batting effort with 25 runs. Laura Delany and Orla Prendergast were the only other players to achieve double-digit scores. Following Bangladesh’s decision to bat first after winning the toss, openers Murshida Khatun and Fargana Hoque Pinky established a 59-run partnership. This stand concluded when Murshida Khatun was caught by Aimee Maguire off Delany’s bowling. Sharmin Akhter then joined the innings, going on to become the highest scorer with 96 runs. Ireland’s chase began with early setbacks, as Marufa Akter claimed the wickets of new captain Gaby Lewis for five runs and Amy Hunter for a duck with consecutive deliveries. Forbes and Prendergast provided a period of stability, but Prendergast’s dismissal left the team at 48 for 3 wickets. Delany’s contribution of 22 runs from 38 balls helped advance the score to 84 for 5. However, her subsequent dismissal by Nahida Akter triggered a collapse of Ireland’s lower order, resulting in the team being all-out for 98. The second match of the three-ODI series is scheduled for Saturday. After the conclusion of the ODI series, both teams are set to compete in three Twenty20 (T20) matches.
