The inaugural Baller League UK season is slated to commence in March 2025. Social media has recently been generating considerable discussion regarding this new football league, prompting questions about its nature and the widespread interest it has garnered. Influencers and former professional footballers have collaborated to introduce both UK and American versions of the Baller League in 2025. This six-a-side football format was initially established in Germany by entrepreneur Felix Starck, alongside footballers Mats Hummels and Lukas Podolski, and is now expanding to the United Kingdom and the United States. KSI, who boasts 24.8 million YouTube subscribers, will serve as president of the UK version, while streamer IShowSpeed has been designated president of the American league. Football legends Gary Lineker, John Terry, and Luis Figo have been secured as team managers, with Micah Richards, Alan Shearer, Freddie Ljungberg, Jens Lehmann, and Robert Pires also recruited as coaches. “Sport is no longer as easy as just saying ‘look, we’re here now, come and watch us,’ says Starck. “That’s just not how sport works any more. It needs to be exciting, and it needs to be authentic. Those are the two words that we always use at Baller League.” Miniminter and Tobi, both members of the YouTube group Sidemen, in addition to streamer AngryGinge, are expected to take on management roles. Former Barcelona and Brazil playmaker Ronaldinho and IShowSpeed are the sole individuals confirmed for the US version thus far. Starck, along with former Germany internationals Hummels and Podolski, launched the Baller League in their home country in 2023, with two seasons having already concluded. The competition originated within a disused plane hangar in Cologne, and matches were broadcast live on the online platform Twitch. Similar to the forthcoming UK version, several prominent figures contributed their expertise, including former Germany international Christoph Kramer and Juventus forward Alisha Lehmann. Switzerland international Lehmann notably guided Streets United to triumph in the inaugural season. Baller League UK is scheduled to commence on 3 March 2025 and will be held every Monday until 19 May on indoor football pitches, featuring 12 participating teams. The top four teams in the league will advance to the play-offs to determine the champion. Trials are planned for London and Manchester, with recently retired professionals, futsal players, free agents, and released academy players among those qualified to participate. Each match will be broadcast live online, with YouTuber Chunkz presenting a weekly program. Baller League has drawn comparisons to Gerard Pique’s Kings League in Spain. This marks another instance of social media personalities engaging with a sport. Influencers ventured into boxing in 2018, with KSI facing Joe Weller in an amateur contest, and interest has surged dramatically over the past six years. Misfits Boxing, a promotion led by KSI, stages frequent pay-per-view events featuring social media influencers and sportspeople competing. Former UFC fighter Darren Till is set to face Love Island star Tommy Fury on a Misfits card in Manchester in January. Baller League aims to replicate that model, with a combination of athletes and internet personalities seeking to attract a new audience. Each half of a match will last 15 minutes, and every team will comprise a squad of 12 players. Participants are slated to earn a fee of £400 per game. Matches will be contested in a six-a-side format on a smaller indoor pitch. Rule variations will be implemented during the concluding three minutes of each half, encompassing elements such as three-on-three play, long-range goals being worth double, and goalkeepers being prohibited from using their hands. MLS-style one-on-one penalties will also be featured.
