A baker, who secured over £800,000 from a lottery victory, characterized this achievement as an “insane” conclusion to a year marked by her recovery from cancer, supporting her parents through severe health issues, and becoming pregnant. Lauren Tomlinson, a resident of Rotherham, received the award after her specific postcode was chosen as part of a £17.5 million shared prize pool from the People’s Postcode Lottery. Ms. Tomlinson, having received a clean bill of health from cancer earlier in the year, has also provided assistance to her mother, Andrea, following Andrea’s cancer diagnosis, and to her father, Darren, who experienced a “massive stroke.” Having committed to sharing the £836,114 winnings with her parents, she expressed that the lottery success gave her the feeling she could “save them for the rest of their life.” “It has just been insane,” she stated. “And to find out I’m having a baby when I didn’t know I could have one, and now I’ve won the postcode lottery – you just can’t write it.” The 33-year-old, who operates Tomo’s Cakes alongside her mother from a converted shipping container located in her garden, typically dedicates up to 18 hours daily to baking; however, she now intends to establish a retail shop within the town. She mentioned that she established the business to remain at home with her parents and “try and heal” following the loss of her brother five years prior. “I thought I’d be in my back garden for my life,” she commented. “I love my job with all my heart, but now … I can see in my head what the shop is going to look like.” Additionally, three of her neighbours each received £418,057, and 557 individuals residing within the broader S65 3 postcode area also secured winnings that varied from £24,266 to £97,064. Ms. Tomlinson, whose baby is due in June, stated that her immediate concern was to “get some Christmas back into the house.” “We work really hard to pay the bills and Christmas is a busy time for business,” she explained. “Now I can actually go out and buy my parents presents.”
