An acclaimed writer is scheduled to present the narratives linked to a collection of historical Suffolk postcards, which she discovered during the research for her most recent publication. The Southwold Literary Festival, hosted at the Southwold Arts Centre within St Edmund’s Hall, is set to feature author Lisa Woollett on the morning of November 9. Commencing at 11:30 GMT, her presentation will explore material from her recently published hardback, titled *Lost To The Sea: A Journey Round the Edges of Britain and Ireland*. This publication examines the manner in which the “sea has forged, shaped and often overwhelmed” coastal landscapes and communities, specifically mentioning locations such as Pakefield, Dunwich, and Slaughden. The customized discussion will primarily focus on the Suffolk postcards that the author located and gathered during her book’s research phase. For instance, one such postcard illustrated Slaughden’s erstwhile Three Mariners Inn, which was lost to the North Sea during the 1920s. A different postcard featured Southwold’s Long Island Cliff Watch House, which served as a lookout point for distressed vessels in the 1800s prior to its ultimate destruction by a tidal surge. A representative for the Southwold Literary Festival, scheduled to run from November 8-10, stated: “Join us for an author talk with award-winning novelist Lisa Woollett.“Lisa will be talking to us about her career so far and her latest book, Lost to the Sea.“In Lost to the Sea on a series of coastal walks, she takes us on an illuminating journey, bringing to life the places where mythology and reality meet.“Lisa draws together archaeology, meetings with locals and tales from folklore to reveal how the sea forged, shaped and overwhelmed landscapes and communities.” The Southwold Literary Festival, established through a collaboration between Southwold Library and Southwold Arts Centre, commenced in 2023. The current year’s festival lineup includes 12 events featuring 14 authors, among them Richard Mabey, Rachel Hore, Kate Sawyer, and numerous others.
