The counties of Norfolk, Suffolk, Lincolnshire, and specific areas within Yorkshire are now under avian flu restrictions. According to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) has been put in place to reduce the likelihood of additional outbreaks. Defra reported recent detections of bird flu in the East Riding of Yorkshire and Hull. Consequently, it is now a legal obligation for all bird keepers within these regions to “mitigate the risk of further outbreaks of the disease.” A total of six premises across England have confirmed cases: three in Norfolk, two in Yorkshire, and one in Cornwall. Defra affirmed that the danger to human health remains minimal, and that poultry and poultry products, such as eggs, are safe for consumption when properly cooked. Christine Middlemiss, the UK’s chief veterinary officer, stated: “This means that all bird keepers in these areas must take enhanced biosecurity actions now to both help prevent disease getting in to flocks and stop it spreading any further.” She further advised that bird keepers are required to implement strong biosecurity protocols, stay vigilant for any indicators of the disease, and promptly report any suspected cases to the Animal and Plant Health Agency. Aled Edwards, who serves as the head of field delivery at the Animal and Plant Health Agency, commented that its scientists, veterinarians, and field teams are “working hard to help tackle the spread of avian influenza and ensure bird keepers are kept up to date and supported.” For updates on news from the East of England, information is available on X, Instagram, and Facebook via BBC Norfolk or BBC Suffolk.
