Nathan McSweeney is slated to make his debut for Australia, opening the batting alongside Usman Khawaja in the inaugural Test match against India in Perth. The 25-year-old recently took on the opening role for the first time in first-class cricket during a game against India A, where he recorded scores of 14 and 25. He will partner with seasoned batter Usman Khawaja. Additionally, Josh Inglis, who is also uncapped, has been named in the 13-player squad. The initial Test is scheduled to commence on November 22, with subsequent matches taking place in Adelaide and Brisbane. The series will also feature the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne and the New Year’s Test in Sydney. McSweeney boasts a first-class average of 38.16, including six centuries. He has been chosen over former openers Marcus Harris and Cameron Bancroft, as Australia aims to find a stable successor for the recently retired David Warner. Earlier this year, former captain Steve Smith briefly served as an opener before returning to his preferred number four position, with Marnus Labuschagne batting at number three. The strong bowling lineup is spearheaded by Captain Pat Cummins, featuring left-arm pacer Mitchell Starc, fellow seamers Josh Hazlewood and Scott Boland, and off-spinner Nathan Lyon. India has emerged victorious in the last four Test series contested for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
