Neale Fraser, a former Wimbledon champion, has passed away at 91 years old. He was depicted celebrating his 1960 Wimbledon title victory, having defeated Rod Laver in the final. The Australian athlete secured the Wimbledon singles championship in 1960, in addition to winning the US National Championships in both 1959 and 1960, during an era when tennis remained an amateur sport. Furthermore, he earned 11 men’s doubles and five mixed doubles Grand Slam titles, achieving the men’s singles world number one ranking in 1959. As a player, Fraser participated in four victorious Davis Cup teams, subsequently leading Australia as captain in the competition for 24 years, securing four additional victories. Tennis Australia stated, “A true legend of Australian tennis, who will be missed by so many around the world.” In 1960, Fraser defeated fellow countryman Rod Laver to secure both the Wimbledon and US titles. Laver expressed, “I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of my dear mate and fellow lefty, Neale Fraser.” “He was a true gem in a golden era of Australian tennis legends – an incredible world number one, a Grand Slam champion, and a Davis Cup icon. Neale bested me in two major finals, pushing me to become a better player. My heartfelt condolences go out to [his wife] Thea and Neale’s extended family. I’ll miss you dearly, buddy. Rest in peace.” Pat Cash, also a former Wimbledon champion, played on the Australian team that triumphed in the Davis Cup in 1983 and 1986 with Fraser as captain, describing Fraser as a paternal figure to him. Cash further commented, “He just knew how to make you feel important and play your best.” Elsewhere, Sandi Toksvig was featured alongside Gyles Brandreth, Lulu, Emmanuel Sonubi, and Alan Davies. Opportunities were provided to sing along to music from Queen, Taylor Swift, Bon Jovi, Katy Perry, and other artists. Ben Fogle and Kate Humble returned for the seasonal celebrations at Longleat Safari Park. Discussions covered topics ranging from microplastics in our air, soil, and waterways to the amount of food waste observed during this time of year. © 2024 BBC.
