Former Premier League goalkeeper David James stated that Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou should “absolutely not” be facing any pressure from chairman Daniel Levy. A sense of dissatisfaction was evident at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium prior to kick-off, as several hundred supporters organized a protest targeting Levy. Black balloons were released during the 24th minute of the match, symbolizing the 24 years the current leadership has been in power, with their most recent trophy being the 2008 League Cup. Any anticipation that the team’s performance might boost morale was quickly extinguished as Liverpool promptly began to capitalize on Spurs’ weaknesses and depleted state from the outset. On BBC Radio 5 Live’s Football Daily podcast, James remarked, “Liverpool were so good that they made Tottenham look bad, but their style of play will always cause problems and that’s how they got back into the game.” He further added, “Postecoglou’s style of play is fantastic and with the players he has got, there is a good chance that we will start to see Tottenham doing something very decent.” Former Premier League midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker commented, “It is not just about style because they simply can’t defend. It is horrendous.” He continued, “There is always talk about the high line but you can’t keep defending in the same way.” Reo-Coker also suggested that Postecoglou is likely to remain in his position until the conclusion of the season. However, he noted that the manager has created pressure for himself by stating his consistent record of winning a cup in his second year at a club. Reo-Coker emphasized that a cup victory is crucial for Tottenham, as securing a top-four finish is improbable, making a cup win their sole potential redemption.
