The reasons behind Julen Lopetegui’s apparent difficulties at West Ham are not immediately clear. An analysis of their recent fixtures reveals that most defeats have come against prominent teams such as Chelsea, Liverpool, and Aston Villa. The sole exception outside this group was Nottingham Forest, who were positioned in the top three at the time of their encounter. Generally, the team has secured favorable outcomes against opponents they were expected to overcome. Adaptation periods are typically required for both new managers and their squads. West Ham supporters had expressed a desire for a manager who would implement an expansive, possession-oriented, and aesthetically pleasing style of football, a profile that Lopetegui may not embody. It is noted that “You have to be careful what you wish for.” David Moyes’s tenure saw West Ham qualify for European competitions and win the Conference League trophy, achievements that were arguably beyond initial expectations for the club. While patience is necessary, the current squad is considered to possess sufficient quality. Given the caliber of their players, improved results are anticipated. Expectations are for performances to enhance over the upcoming fixtures and into December; should this not occur, it would be appropriate to raise concerns. Nevertheless, discussions regarding his dismissal during the current international break are considered premature. Despite only recently assuming the position, expectations for his performance were notably elevated. Ultimately, West Ham’s primary objective is to maintain their position in the Premier League, with securing European qualification being a significant bonus. Effective management inherently requires time. While players must improve their performance, the manager also requires an adequate period to integrate the team. The proposition of dismissing him and initiating another rebuilding phase with a different manager, considering the players he has already brought in, is not deemed the correct course of action at this juncture. These observations were made by Fara Williams in an interview with BBC Sport’s Nicola Pearson.
