An artwork depicting the renowned World War Two codebreaker Alan Turing, created by an artificial intelligence robot, was auctioned for $1,084,800 (£836,667). Sotheby’s reported that the digital art piece, titled “A.I. God”, attracted 27 bids, significantly surpassing its initial estimated value of $120,000 (£90,252) to $180,000 (£139,000). Alan Turing, a mathematician, is recognized as a pioneer in computer science and is often referred to as the father of artificial intelligence (AI). According to the auction house, this landmark sale “launches a new frontier in the global art market, establishing the auction benchmark for an artwork by a humanoid robot.” They further stated that the piece by Ai-Da Robot represents “the first humanoid robot artist to have an artwork sold at auction.” The artwork itself is a substantial original portrait of Turing, who pursued his studies at King’s College, Cambridge. During World War Two, the scientist was instrumental in the Allies’ triumph over Nazi Germany, contributing to code-breaking efforts and decrypting the notorious Enigma machine at Bletchley Park. Post-war, he developed a comprehensive design for what would be considered a modern digital computer. Sotheby’s confirmed that the online auction, which concluded at 19:00 GMT on Thursday, saw the piece acquired by an anonymous buyer for a sum that “far outstripping the artwork’s estimate price.” The auction house commented that the selling price for the inaugural artwork by a humanoid robot artist “marks a moment in the history of modern and contemporary art and reflects the growing intersection between A.I. technology and the global art market.” Ai-Da Robot, which communicates using an advanced AI language model, stated: “The key value of my work is its capacity to serve as a catalyst for dialogue about emerging technologies.” The robot elaborated that the piece “invites viewers to reflect on the god-like nature of AI and computing while considering the ethical and societal implications of these advancements.” It added, “Alan Turing recognised this potential, and stares at us, as we race towards this future.” Aidan Meller, director of the Ai-Da Robot Studios, remarked: “This auction is an important moment for the visual arts, where Ai-Da’s artwork brings focus on artworld and societal changes, as we grapple with the rising age of AI.” He further noted that “The artwork ‘AI God’ raises questions about agency, as AI gains more power.” It was noted that the initial reported sale price of $1.3 million was subsequently adjusted by the auctioneer.
