An exhibition featuring artwork by Peter Firmin, the co-creator of well-known children’s television characters such as Bagpuss, The Clangers, and Basil Brush, is scheduled to open in Kent. Over 20 linocuts crafted by Firmin, with some depicting Bagpuss, will be showcased at Lovelys Gallery in Cliftonville starting this Saturday. Peter Firmin, a former resident of Blean who passed away six years ago, developed numerous celebrated television programmes during the 1960s and 1970s in collaboration with Oliver Postgate, also a Kent resident. Emily Firmin, his daughter, who appeared in the introductory sequence of the 1974 Bagpuss series, is expected to be present at the exhibition’s launch at 14:00 GMT to “discuss the life and work of her father”. Ms Firmin stated: ‘His work in lino and vinyl cuts continued throughout his life, starting with woodcuts at college. “His illustrations are incredible and contain such fine detail.” In 2014, Peter Firmin was honored with the Bafta Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his significant contributions to children’s television. Among his renowned productions were Ivor the Engine, Noggin the Nog, and Pogles’ Wood. He passed away at his Kent residence in 2018 at the age of 89. Beyond his television career, Firmin was also recognized as a skilled printmaker and craftsman. A spokesperson for Lovelys Gallery commented: “Peter’s linocuts, made using an ancient Albion press, are incredibly detailed, as well charming and nostalgic.” The display of his artwork is scheduled to conclude on 4 January.
