Manager Mikel Arteta provided reassurance regarding Kieran Tierney’s condition after the Scotland defender, making his comeback after a six-month absence, was substituted prior to the conclusion of Arsenal’s 3-2 League Cup quarter-final victory against Crystal Palace. The 27-year-old had been inactive since sustaining a hamstring injury during Scotland’s 1-1 draw with Switzerland at the Euro 2024 finals in June. Following his return to full training, Tierney had been listed as an unused substitute in Arsenal’s preceding seven matches. However, in his initial appearance for the Gunners in 500 days, where he was deployed as a winger, he was withdrawn after 69 minutes. At that point, the score was tied 1-1 at the Emirates Stadium. While Arsenal’s official website initially indicated an injury, Manager Arteta clarified the situation during his post-match interview, stating: “It was cramp.” Addressing the decision to deploy Tierney in a more advanced position than his customary left-back role, the manager further commented: “He’s playing to his strengths. That’s something that we have to continue to learn, because they give you a lot of information.” He continued, “They tell you not sometimes with their words but with a lot of information, where they feel more comfortable and certainly there is a much better fit for him.” Tierney’s comeback to competitive play occurred concurrently with an external report alleging that Arsenal has opted not to exercise the option to prolong his contract past its expiration this summer. This match against Palace marked his initial appearance for Arsenal since his substitution in their penalty shoot-out triumph over Manchester City in the Community Shield in August 2023. After losing his regular place under Arteta, Tierney spent the previous season on loan with the Spanish club Real Sociedad, where he played 26 matches as they secured a sixth-place finish in La Liga.
