The Artventure Trust, a Surrey-based charity that operates art studios for adults with learning disabilities, is commemorating its 40th anniversary through a silent auction. This organization conducts art workshops weekly for 55 adults at its studios located in Merrow and Bramley. To mark the charity’s milestone, the participating artists have contributed 40 pieces of their work. According to Manager Mariann Kehrling, the donated artworks were “especially hand-picked for this occasion and I think everybody can find something that they will like”. She further stated that the art sessions provide a significant avenue for the artists, including those who are non-verbal, to express themselves. Kehrling remarked, “It’s the nicest thing to see them lost in art and the other brilliant thing is seeing them find their own voice by doing this.” Artist Nico Attallah expressed, “I hope that my art will be sold to somebody else.” He conveyed that he would feel “surprised and amazed” if his creation were to be displayed on a buyer’s wall. Attallah added, “I will even amaze myself.” Nico commented that creating art “helps you be the people you are”. He elaborated, “It helps you be free and you can do whatever you want in your art. And nobody can judge you, who you are.” Pippa Mathers shared her enjoyment of creating art. She described it as, “It’s quite freeing in a sense. You can come up with whatever you feel like.” Sue Cundell, a trustee for the charity, mentioned that artworks produced by Artventure participants have been exhibited throughout Surrey, including at locations such as Guildford Railway Station and the Electric Theatre. She noted that seeing the art framed and on display signifies “you can see their confidence lift.” Cundell further stated, “They come to life when they start talking about their art work. It gives them something to focus on and they come alive as they’re talking about it.” The public has the opportunity to bid on the artwork until Saturday 1 December. Additionally, Christmas cards are available for purchase via the Artventure Trust website. For updates, follow BBC Surrey on Facebook and X.
