Police have stated that a significant fire erupting at a Birmingham shop is being treated as arson, following a suspected incident where a vehicle struck the building before being intentionally set ablaze. The inferno originated at the retail establishment on Stratford Road, located in the Sparkhill area, shortly before 04:55 GMT, subsequently extending to the residential units situated above. Residents were compelled to evacuate their residences. Paramedics assessed five individuals, but no injuries were reported. Isaac Zintaan, a local businessman, recounted that nearby residents informed him they heard a loud explosion, which they described as “like a bomb went off.” The 28-year-old added, “[When I arrived] everyone was coughing due to the intensity of the smoke.” He observed that a car appeared to have collided with a supermarket on the building’s ground floor, and video footage depicted a Land Rover engulfed in flames with its rear positioned against the property, suggesting it had reversed into the structure. A 4×4 vehicle, visibly charred and distorted by the fire, was photographed being removed from the shop by a fire truck. An arson investigation is currently being conducted by both police and fire investigators. At its peak, the incident involved 55 firefighters. The fire has since been brought under control, though crews remain present at the location. The A34 Stratford Road, a primary thoroughfare leading into Birmingham centre, was closed in both directions between Formans Road and Nansen Road during the morning rush hour. Buses operated by National Express West Midlands were rerouted. Abdul Khan, administrator of the Sparkhill Neighbourhood page on Facebook, advised the public to plan their journeys accordingly.
