Police have indicated that an arson attack, which resulted in significant damage to a residence in County Down, may be connected to a continuing loyalist feud. The incident occurred at a vacant property located in Weaver’s Grange, Newtownards, just prior to 00:40 GMT on Sunday. An accelerant was reportedly applied to the door and inserted through the letterbox. The resulting fire inflicted considerable damage to the front door and caused smoke damage throughout the interior of the house. Detective Inspector Ryan described the attack as “completely reckless,” noting its potential for severe repercussions for occupants of adjacent properties. The officer added, “Thankfully, our fire service colleagues were able to extinguish the blaze before it spread to them.” The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) stated that multiple investigative avenues are being pursued, and a public appeal for information has been issued. This particular residence was reportedly the target of an arson attack in November of the previous year. Law enforcement officials have been investigating a sequence of incidents that they suspect are connected to a dispute between competing drugs gangs, which were formerly affiliated with the Ulster Defence Association (UDA). Last year, similar attacks occurred in Bangor, Newtownards, Donaghadee, and Ballywalter. Alliance councillor Vicky Moore commented that the perpetrators possess “nothing to offer” the community. She further stated, “There have been a number of arson attacks and other incidents.” “It’s very disrupting for the families and the other people that live here,” she added. Ms. Moore also noted the occurrence of “sectarian graffiti” in the vicinity, alongside the arson incidents.
