Arsene Wenger, who holds the position of Fifa’s chief of global football development, is set to lead a Fifa taskforce dedicated to player welfare, amidst escalating concerns regarding the football calendar. This month, the leading European leagues and the players’ union Fifpro lodged a formal legal complaint with the European Commission against Fifa. They allege an “abuse of dominance” by world football’s governing body concerning the international fixture calendar. The taskforce, under Wenger’s leadership, includes the players’ union along with representatives from Fifa’s member associations, confederations, the European Club Association, and the World Leagues Association. Fifa stated, “The objective of the taskforce is to examine how suitable and effective safeguards for players can be implemented, also taking into account practical considerations from operational, medical, regulatory and legal perspectives.” Subsequently, the group will “make recommendations informed by the latest scientific research into the topic of players’ physical and mental wellbeing.” The group is scheduled to convene in the coming weeks. The already demanding European football calendar has experienced further congestion due to the expanded Club World Cup, which is planned to be held in the United States from 15 June to 13 July next year. Rodri, a midfielder for both Spain and Manchester City, recently commented that players are nearing a strike in protest against the increasing number of games.
