Arsenal netted five goals in an away Champions League match against Sporting, marking only the third time they have achieved this and the first occasion since their 5-2 win over Fenerbahce in October 2008. The north London side concluded a five-game winless run away from home in the Champions League, which included two draws and three losses, and a failure to score in each of their last four matches. They ended this streak emphatically at Sporting. Five different players scored for Arsenal in a brilliant display as Mikel Arteta’s team easily handled Sporting, who had previously beaten Manchester City 4-1 in their last Champions League fixture. The Gunners held a 3-0 lead at half-time and, despite Goncalo Inacio scoring two minutes after the break, they maintained their composure and continued to control the game. Gabriel scored his first goal in the competition, while Bukayo Saka both scored and provided an assist, and Kai Havertz reached his 100th career club goal across all competitions. Arsenal accumulated an expected goals (xG) tally of 3.89, their highest on record for a match in the competition (since 2013-14), which saw them move up to seventh in the Champions League table.
