Donald Trump expressed that it was an “honour” to encounter Argentina’s President Javier Milei in Florida, prior to a conservative investment summit. President Milei, a right-wing figure, marks the first foreign head of state to meet with Trump following his US presidential election win on 5 November. During a gala held at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort on Thursday, President Milei extended congratulations to the president-elect, stating that the occasion demonstrated “that the forces of heaven [were] on our side”. President Milei is anticipated to be present at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) Investor Summit scheduled for Friday. The day before the summit, CBS, the BBC’s US partner, reported that an unnamed source verified the meeting between the two leaders. Speaking at the America First Policy Institute gala later that evening, the Argentine leader remarked that “the winds of freedom [were] blowing much stronger” following Trump’s victory. The individual, who identifies as an “anarcho-capitalist,” delivered remarks in both English and Spanish, condemning unjust tax systems that resulted in “the redistribution of wealth at gunpoint”. Furthermore, he commended Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur slated to lead Trump’s forthcoming Department of Government Efficiency, asserting that Musk’s social media platform, X, was contributing to “save humanity”. The Argentine president’s initial encounter with Trump occurred at the annual CPAC in February, an event where he hurried backstage to Trump, exclaiming “president!”, and embraced him before they posed for photographs. After Milei’s address on Thursday, Trump stated it was an “honour” to receive him at Mar-a-Lago, referring to him as “a MAGA person”. Trump added, “The job you’ve done is incredible. “Make Argentina Great Again… he’s doing that.” Previously, Argentine news outlets indicated that President Milei intended to pursue a free trade agreement with the United States once Trump assumed office. According to La Nación, Milei commented, “The elected [Trump] government feels much more comfortable working with me than with other governments, and that has commercial and financial implications.” Admission to the CPAC Investor Summit, which is a separate event from the main annual conference, was priced at up to $25,000 (£19,350). CPAC asserts its position as the largest yearly assembly of conservatives in the US and identifies as the nation’s oldest conservative grassroots organization, dedicated to a mission to “preserve and protect the values of life, liberty, and property for every American”. Nigel Farage, leader of Reform UK, and former Prime Minister Liz Truss were among those who spoke at the annual CPAC in February. The Republican party secured complete control of the US government in the election held earlier this month, a feat last accomplished at the commencement of Trump’s initial term in 2017.
