Argentina Hotel Collapse: Search for Survivors Underway

In Argentina, rescue personnel were urgently working to access individuals caught beneath the wreckage following a hotel collapse that has resulted in one confirmed fatality. The Dubrovnik hotel, a 10-story structure situated in the coastal city of Villa Gesell, gave way early on Tuesday. A local resident characterized the scene as akin to a “horror movie”. It is estimated that as many as 15 individuals may have been within the hotel, which had recently been undergoing renovation work. Emergency crews were present at the site, striving to extricate those believed to be entrapped. Among the debris, the remains of a man in his 80s were discovered, and one woman has been successfully rescued to date. According to local officials, construction activities at the hotel had been suspended in August by municipal decree, due to the renovations proceeding without the necessary permits. Nevertheless, residents living nearby informed journalists that work on the structure had persisted despite the issued suspension. Monica Mino, a resident adjacent to the hotel, stated that the building “transformed into a cloud of dust and we couldn’t see anything”. She conveyed to Reuters, “We heard like an earthquake … this was terrible. It’s like a horror movie we’re living.” Patricia Bullrich, Argentina’s national security minister, announced on X that two specialized teams had been dispatched to the location, situated in Buenos Aires province. She indicated that structural engineers, rescue experts, and a K9 unit trained for collapsed structures were present, alongside staff equipped with specialized machinery and assets to support the rescue operation. Javier Alonso, the security minister for the province, informed local radio that four bricklayers who were working at the site managed to escape the collapse and have since been taken into police custody. Alonso further mentioned that neighbors had reported to him that repairs might have been occurring in the hotel’s basement, leading to the building’s subsequent collapse. Images from the site reveal extensive damage to nearby structures caused by falling debris. Villa Gesell is recognized as a popular coastal destination, featuring numerous hotels, resorts, and beaches. The Dubrovnik hotel is situated alongside other hotels on Avenue 1, approximately a five-minute walk from the seafront.
