Approximately 200 individuals participated in a demonstration in Sandy Row, Belfast, opposing the decision to dismantle a bridge in the locality. Work to remove the Boyne Bridge commenced last month, forming part of Translink’s redevelopment initiative for the area surrounding the new Grand Central Station. This evening’s gathering is integrated into a broader campaign aimed at highlighting what organisers contend are more extensive local concerns, such as proposals for student accommodation and an inadequate supply of social housing. An eleventh-hour legal attempt to preserve the bridge in October was unsuccessful. Billy Dickson, who assisted in organising the Save Sandy Row rally, stated: “They have been saying all along that this is supported by the community, both the Grosvenor Road and Sandy Row.” “That’s not the case.” “One of the main objects of the rally tonight is getting that message across,” he added. “If they come in and demolish this bridge, it’s not in the name of Sandy Row.” Durham Street, which traverses the bridge, is scheduled for a one-year closure to facilitate construction activities for the new Grand Central Station. It is believed that William III, also known as King Billy, traversed this location en route to the Battle of the Boyne in 1690. The existing bridge near Sandy Row was reconstructed in 1936, but its initial structure dates back almost four centuries. The proposal to dismantle the bridge has encountered resistance from local inhabitants, who advocated for its renovation and integration into the development schemes. An earlier demonstration also took place close to the site following the announcement in 2017. Translink had previously stated that the undertaking would entail “sensitively dismantling” the bridge. Motorists will be unable to use Durham Street, from Grosvenor Road to Hope Street, until the completion of the project. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
