North Lincolnshire Council has granted approval for the construction of a new police station in Scunthorpe. The three-storey structure, planned for the site of the town’s former market, received approval after a 10-month period due to initial concerns regarding noise. As a condition, planners have restricted the use of sirens in the adjoining car park to the hours of 07:00 and 23:00. The facility is designed to accommodate up to 250 Humberside Police personnel, though a maximum of 80 individuals will be present on site concurrently. The Local Democracy Reporting Service reports that the new facilities will feature “an interview room, a gym, kitchen, rest rooms and a mix of open plan and individual offices.” A custody suite will not be included; individuals arrested within the Scunthorpe area will instead be transported to cells at nearby police stations. An associated car park, situated opposite Home Street, is planned to offer over 100 parking spaces, with 60 specifically allocated for police staff. This new facility is set to replace the current police station located on Corporation Street. The existing station, along with the adjacent Magistrates’ Court and Shelford House, will be transferred to the ownership of North Lincolnshire Council. In return, Humberside Police will acquire ownership of the site for the new station. Modifications will be made to the road network surrounding the building, including an adjustment to the Chapel Street one-way system to facilitate left and right turns for emergency vehicles. The project carries an initial cost estimate of £13.8m and incorporates an extension on its west side to the nearly finished enterprise and innovation hub, known as Project Anchor. The construction phase is anticipated to span 18 months.
