A £2 million waterfront redevelopment project has received official approval, notwithstanding opposition from local boat owners. Ipswich Borough Council formally authorized the renovation of Beacon Marina, formerly known as Neptune Marina, on Wednesday. A petition opposing these plans garnered almost 3,200 signatures, and boat owners expressed criticism regarding the two-week relocation notice they were given. Associated British Ports (ABP), which owns and operates both the Port of Ipswich and the marina, indicated that construction could commence in early 2025. The proposed scheme involves the removal of 93 pontoons from the wet dock, to be substituted by 15 new pontoons positioned in front of the University of Suffolk’s main building. Additionally, two new welfare facilities are slated for construction for the marina’s berth users, alongside a foul water plant designed to serve one of these new structures. The preceding week, council planning officers had recommended the plans for approval. Opponents of the plans raised various concerns, such as potential effects on property value, tourism, trade, noise levels, and marine life. Conversely, some submissions supporting the project stated it would “improve the aesthetics” and emphasized the necessity of mooring upgrades. ABP reported that 150 berths at the marina were unoccupied and that the existing infrastructure in the vicinity necessitated “urgent removal and replacement”.
