An additional hospital within a specific county will now provide HIV and hepatitis screenings to individuals attending its accident and emergency department. This initiative, a year-long project that commenced at Kettering General Hospital in Northamptonshire in early November, has now been expanded to include Northampton General Hospital (NGH). This undertaking forms part of a research study conducted by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), with the objective of lowering the rates at which both viruses are transmitted. Every adult patient requiring a blood test within the A&E department will undergo screening, though they retain the option to decline. The outcomes of these screenings will be made anonymous and utilized for the ongoing research. Contact for additional testing and specialized assistance will only be made with patients whose tests show a reactive result for HIV or hepatitis B and C. Dr Tristan Dyer, NGH’s deputy director for medicine and urgent care, stated: “By normalising testing as part of an emergency department attendance when blood is drawn, we help reduce stigma for these conditions and reach patients who might not otherwise come forward.” Dr Sophie Herbert, a consultant affiliated with Northamptonshire Healthcare Foundation NHS Trust sexual health services, commented that the testing has demonstrated effectiveness in both identifying individuals with blood-borne infections and subsequently providing them with care. She added: “It will also help reduce the number of people presenting with late infections and help reduce their prevalence in our communities.” The NHS trust indicated that Northamptonshire was selected to implement the testing due to its local authority areas exhibiting a significant prevalence of HIV, specifically noting two cases per 1,000 residents in North Northamptonshire and 2.5 per 1,000 individuals in West Northamptonshire. The World Health Organisation has established a target of achieving zero transmission of HIV and viral hepatitis by the year 2030.
