An undisclosed charitable organization has committed £750k towards the preservation of a theatre. Activists are currently working to safeguard the future of the Novello Theatre, previously known as The Picture House, located in Ascot. During a recent community assembly, which saw attendance from more than 120 individuals, it was confirmed that a charity has intervened with an offer of assistance. The “Save Novello Picture House” initiative aims to restore the theatre and integrate it with the adjacent Cordes Hall, operating under the umbrella of a single charity. Building renovations are projected to cost up to £500,000, in addition to the acquisition price. The theatre, situated on High Street, was designated an Asset of Community Value in April, granting local groups a six-month window to accumulate necessary funds before the property could be listed on the open market. The initial financial projection for the purchase and structural repairs stood at an estimated £750k. The campaign group has stated that a local charity has “very generously, conditionally pledged” this sum. At the meeting, it was clarified that this funding arrangement would involve the charity owning and maintaining the theatre building, subsequently leasing it back to the appeal group at a “very low annual rent for exclusive use as a theatre and community asset.” A spokesperson for the group commented: “As you can understand, this is a significant sum of money to put forward and, in line with charity commission guidance, the charity in question is conducting the necessary due diligence on the processes and operations that underpin the donation before it can be completely finalised. This is a business and legal process which can take some time, but when all parties are confident that the background work is complete, we will be able to reveal their name and we can all publicly thank the charity in question.” For updates, BBC Berkshire can be followed on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), or Instagram.
