An annual charity Christmas present “pick” event has facilitated the distribution of more than 400 toys to families in need. The Spring Charity in Northampton dedicated six months to organizing this donation event, which allows families to select a gift for their children. The initiative resulted in 418 children receiving a present of their choice, along with access to a wrapping station. Tracey Hamilton, the charity manager, stated that the yearly event provided “relief” for some parents. She explained, “We set it up as a shop, so as far as the children are concerned their parents are going to the shop and don’t have to pay for it.” Ms. Hamilton added, “Our volunteers are there with wrapping paper and scissors, bows and everything they need so their children can have a lovely Christmas.” The Spring Charity, which offers community services to families aimed at improving their wellbeing and life outcomes, has been operating this present pick shop for three years. Ms. Hamilton described this year’s event, held at the charity’s base on Spring Lane, as being managed like a “military operation,” with toys being donated from July by local businesses and members of the community. The charity event has expanded year on year, and Ms. Hamilton noted that working families frequently require this support. She commented, “This time of year is really hard for people where they’ve been clinging on by their fingernails all year, and then realise they have got the expense of Christmas.” She further elaborated, “People always have this sort of generalisation that people on benefits struggle, but actually it’s those parents who are just earning the minimum wage, where both parents are working.” Approximately 12 individuals volunteer at The Spring Charity, some of whom have previously received assistance from the organization. Ms. Hamilton expressed her gratitude, stating, “I’m really grateful to all the people that donate and all the people that volunteer.” She added, “The joy we get from seeing those happy faces; you can see parents smiling and have got a bit of relief; that’s worth its weight in gold.” Information regarding Northamptonshire news is available on BBC Sounds, Facebook, Instagram, and X.
