An animal rescue organization has described the requirement for updated dog kennels as “quite desperate”. According to Eden Animal Rescue Centre, its forthcoming facility, comprising 20 kennels at Moorlands Head Farm, located near Penrith, Cumbria, is expected to provide improved conditions, thereby facilitating the rehoming process for dogs. The charity anticipates the swift completion of this site, despite the project’s ongoing need for additional financial support. Fran Flower, a representative from the rescue, stated that the new kennels would represent a significant advancement, being “light years ahead” of the existing structures. Ms Flower, who has arranged a pop-up pet shop at Langwathby Village Hall to assist with fundraising, commented: “We do have some long-stay dogs, so for them in particular, having the best next thing to home, is so important.” She further explained that the new facilities would provide “lot more space” for the dogs and simplify care tasks for staff and volunteers. She added: “The present kennels are just not adequate.” These updated facilities are planned to include four dedicated units for screening dogs for infections prior to their transfer to the primary kennels. Additionally, soundproofing will be incorporated to mitigate distress among dogs caused by barking from others. Ms Flower indicated that construction was reaching an “exciting stage”, with the relocation of dogs anticipated post-Christmas. She remarked: “We can even take some of the dogs in before long to say ‘which kennel would you like?'” The broader initiative also encompasses proposals to convert the existing kennel building into an indoor training space for dogs and an area where prospective owners can interact with the animals.
