A pair has received a 10-year prohibition on owning animals after they allowed a French Bulldog puppy to endure injuries, which included a fractured leg and lacerations to its face. Sheldon Turner and Lucy Blackmore, residents of Bridgwater, Somerset, received their sentences at Taunton Magistrates Court on November 5. According to police reports, the puppy, named Pepsi, was discovered inside a container, with a hosepipe used to weigh down its lid. Pepsi’s front leg was fractured and had gone without treatment for a period ranging from two to six weeks, ultimately requiring amputation. “Despite being aware of Pepsi’s health issues, they did not seek vet help for her,” stated RSPCA Deputy Chief Inspector Simon Coombs. He further commented, “But for the intervention of the Police and RSPCA her situation would have continued – as it had done for the six weeks since she came to them, apparently already with the health issues and injuries.” The court heard that law enforcement officers visited the residence on Warren Close in Bridgwater in December 2023, following reports expressing apprehension regarding the welfare of a dog at that location. Veterinary professionals examined Pepsi and identified signs of bruising and cuts, which were determined to have occurred within 24 hours prior to her discovery. Mr. Coombs remarked, “Owning a dog like Pepsi is a privilege, so it is heartbreaking to think what she went through. Dogs feel pain and suffering just like we do and always deserve to be shown kindness and compassion.” The charity reported that RSPCA personnel provided care to Pepsi, helping her recover, and she is expected to be available for adoption in the near future. Turner, residing at Regents Court, had two additional dogs seized by the RSPA and was mandated to fulfill an 18-month community order, which encompasses 30 days of rehabilitation activity requirements. Furthermore, he was directed to pay a total of £594 in penalties. Blackmore, whose address is Warren Close, was instructed to pay a total of £760 in fines. Both individuals retain the right to appeal their respective prohibitions after a period of five years. Copyright 2024 BBC. All rights reserved.
