Mining company Anglo American has announced the closure of its offices in Scarborough, a measure taken as part of a “slowdown” initiative aimed at reducing costs. The firm indicated that Resolution House will be closed from mid-December, along with another office situated at Wilton International in Redcar. Earlier this year, the company had disclosed plans to eliminate over 100 jobs at the Woodsmith fertiliser mine near Whitby. Announcing these reductions in June, Tom McCulley, the chief executive officer of the firm’s crop nutrients division, stated that “budget constraints within Anglo, which are outside of the Woodsmith team’s control, necessitate that we slow down for 18 months”. According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, North Yorkshire Council reported that approximately 40 individuals are based at Resolution House. Council leader, Carl Les, commented: “Everyone who has, or will be, impacted is aware of their situation.” He further added: “In total, the number of job losses of York and North Yorkshire residents resulting from the slowdown began will be approximately 170.” Anglo American is currently engaged in the development of a polyhalite fertiliser mine and a 23-mile tunnel. This project aims to transport the product to Teesside for global sale, with the objective of boosting crop yields. The company stated its decision was to consolidate its team at “one location at Woodsmith Mine on a temporary basis during the slowdown”. It is understood that Anglo American will retain ownership of the Resolution House site and intends to return “when the project ramps back up”.
