Andy Mitten, an editor for United We Stand and a writer for The Athletic, offered his insights on BBC Radio 5 Live regarding the situation at Manchester United. Mitten stated, “I’m sure he will get a honeymoon period like the last six or seven United managers in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era.” He further elaborated on the new manager’s task, noting, “He is very highly rated, like the last managers have been too. He has a very difficult job, a very complex dressing room at Manchester United. The team has underwhelmed.” Mitten explained the complexity of the dressing room by highlighting that the players’ ability does not match the standard of their rivals. He questioned the number of Manchester United players who would secure a spot in a top rival team, despite their potential high remuneration and significant social media followings. He observed that confidence within the squad is low. Players have shown initial strong performances in matches but have struggled to consistently execute the manager’s instructions. Mitten also pointed out the presence of “big egos” among players from various global backgrounds. Mitten contrasted the challenge of managing an underperforming team with the relative ease of leading a confident and victorious dressing room. Expressing his well wishes for the incoming manager, Mitten hoped the individual could replicate the success achieved at Sporting, where the team was found in a “perilous state.” He emphasized that the situation at Manchester United encompasses more than just the football itself. He further elaborated on the immense pressures involved, noting that both the manager and players face global criticism following every match loss. Mitten attributed the high expectations to Manchester United’s status as a “huge football club,” which inherently brings significant pressure.
