Football pundit Andros Townsend suggests that the groundwork laid by Erik ten Hag at Manchester United requires only “minor tweaks” for Ruben Amorim to achieve success. Amorim, previously the manager of Sporting Lisbon, officially commenced his duties at Old Trafford this week, with his inaugural match scheduled for Sunday against Ipswich Town. Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club, Townsend stated, “I don’t think he will fully be able to get his methodologies across because some of the players don’t come back from international duty until late in the week.” He further added, “I also don’t think Erik ten Hag was that far from getting things right – in terms of on the pitch – so I don’t think it’s wholesale changes.” Townsend observed that during the current season, there were instances where the team’s performance was nearly complete. Despite playing effectively and generating scoring opportunities, they lacked a fit Rasmus Hojlund or another capable number nine to convert those chances. He noted that Ten Hag’s tactical approach involved a high press, but key players such as Garnacho sustained injuries, and Mason Mount was largely unavailable throughout his tenure. Townsend suggested Ten Hag was unfortunate not to have the players he invested significantly in at his disposal to fully execute his strategic vision. Townsend reiterated that only “minor tweaks” are necessary, implying it will not require an extended period for Amorim to establish his preferred team and playing style. He concluded that Amorim’s most significant challenge between now and Christmas will be the limited “time on the training pitch.”
