Sporting manager Ruben Amorim has stated that a “clarification” regarding his anticipated transfer to Manchester United is expected following his club’s match against Estrela on Friday. He is projected to continue leading the Portuguese team Sporting up until the upcoming international break, scheduled from 11-19 November. Uncertainty persists regarding the finalization of an agreement for Amorim to assume the managerial role at Old Trafford, subsequent to Erik ten Hag’s dismissal on Monday. Amorim, 39, commented, “It’s a negotiation between two clubs, it’s never easy.” Sir Dave Brailsford, a board member for United, informed supporters “it’s done” upon his arrival for Wednesday’s EFL Cup victory against Leicester, where he also posed for a photograph. Further sources from Portugal have confirmed this detail. Nevertheless, Sporting officials maintain that no official agreement has been reached yet and discussions are ongoing. Manchester United has declined to provide a statement. Amorim further stated, “Even with the clauses, it’s never easy, they have to talk and we will have clarification after the game, it will be very clear.” He concluded, “So it’s one more day after the game tomorrow, we will have a decision made.” Sporting is scheduled for a crucial Champions League match against Manchester City on Tuesday, and will face Amorim’s previous club Braga in the league on 10 November, preceding a halt in European top-tier football for Nations League fixtures. Ruben Amorim has managed Sporting since March 2020. Sporting has secured victories in all nine of its league matches this season, maintaining a three-point advantage over their Lisbon rivals Benfica at the summit of the standings. On Tuesday, they defeated Nacional 3-1 in the Portuguese League Cup; however, Amorim conceded that recent conjectures regarding his future have unsettled the team. Amorim stated, “I know my players and I’m honest with you when I say that they weren’t normal. I realised they were nervous and anxious about the news, with a series of tough games coming up.” He continued, “They know me so well. I’ve proved that I’ll defend them until the last minute. But there are things I can’t control.” Amorim added, “There are things we can’t control, the clubs are negotiating. It’s not the coach’s decision.” As Amorim rose to depart Thursday’s news conference, he was questioned about his preferences regarding the Premier League, to which he responded, “everything,” accompanied by a smile. Due to Sporting’s financial regulations, the club is obligated to inform the Lisbon Stock Exchange once an agreement for his departure has been finalized. Ruud van Nistelrooy held his inaugural news conference on Thursday, following his appointment as United’s interim manager. The ex-Manchester United forward stated he was informed his tenure in the role would be for a “short” duration and mentioned he was “guessing” he would oversee Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Chelsea. Van Nistelrooy remarked, “I felt that I was called upon to help the club forward in the situation and obviously it was difficult that Erik [ten Hag] had to leave.” He continued, “It was very disappointing, obviously with mixed feelings, but after that you have to switch the mindset to win because in the end there’s 75,000 people waiting and celebrating, and millions watching at home.” Van Nistelrooy added, “I think that’s what we try to do and same for Sunday at least, then after that we’ll see.” Van Nistelrooy additionally spoke about his discussions this week with Ten Hag, subsequent to his dismissal, and with former United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who observed Wednesday’s victory at Old Trafford. Regarding Ten Hag, with whom he conversed prior to Wednesday’s win against Leicester, he commented: “Obviously [he’s] very disappointed because he really cared for the club.” He elaborated, “In the first conversation we had over talks for me to come back to the club with him, I really felt that he cared and loved the club and wanted to bring this club forward. “That’s where we connected and that’s why he’s also hurt that he had to leave but [he’s] also proud of his achievements here with the two cups and obviously the history that he’s leaving with that.” Pertaining to United legend Ferguson, Van Nistelrooy stated: “We spoke shortly about my situation, shortly about the team, and most of all he wished me luck for the game. It’s always great to speak to him.” Subsequent to Sunday’s match against Chelsea, United is scheduled for a Europa League fixture against Greek club PAOK at Old Trafford on 7 November, followed by hosting Leicester in the league on 10 November, before the international break. They will then travel to newly promoted Ipswich, managed by former United coach Kieran McKenna, directly after the international break. Norwegian team Bodo/Glimt might be Amorim’s initial opponent at Old Trafford in the Europa League on 28 November, with a Premier League match against Everton scheduled for the subsequent weekend. Subsequent to the win against Leicester, Van Nistelrooy expressed his readiness to continue his work at the club “in any capacity.” On Thursday, the 48-year-old Dutchman commented on his future at the club, stating: “I came here to help the club forward, and I’m still very motivated to do so in any capacity as an assistant and now as an interim manager, and after that I go back to my assistant contract that I have here for this season and next. “I’m very motivated to stay here and help the club forward. That’s my absolute goal.”
