An American national is facing a murder charge in connection with the death of his father at a five-star hotel in Ireland. Henry McGowan, aged 30, residing at Clinton Street, Brooklyn, New York, made an appearance before the Portlaoise District Court on Thursday. The charges against him stem from the discovery of 60-year-old John McGowan, who was found with serious injuries in the leisure centre of Ballyfin Demesne Inn, in County Laois, shortly before 20:00 local time on Tuesday. A legal representative for the defence informed the court that his client is experiencing significant mental health challenges. The victim had journeyed to Ireland from the United States earlier on Tuesday, subsequently checking into the hotel. Judge Andrew Cody ordered the accused to be held in custody and stated that “he should receive immediate psychiatric assessment when he arrives at the prison”. The legal proceedings have been postponed until 18 November.
