Southend United, a National League club, has received a new investment from American technology entrepreneur Shivaas Gulati. Mr. Gulati has become a member of the consortium led by Australia’s Justin Rees, which acquired the club during the summer. The club was purchased by COSU (Custodians of Southend United) from its long-standing owner, Ron Martin, after experiencing several years of financial difficulties. Gulati stated, “I’ve been impressed by all the work COSU and the team have already done in a short period of time, and the potential we have in front of us to make this one of the most sustainable and modern clubs in the country.” Mr. Gulati co-founded Remitly, an international money transfer company based in Seattle, in 2011, departing two years prior to pursue other ventures. His investment in the Shrimpers, the amount of which remains undisclosed, includes a position on the board of directors, making him the 11th member of COSU. Club chairman Rees commented, “Since we first met six months ago, we’ve taken the time to get to know each other and ensure we share the same values and vision for the club. Together, we’re committed to building a community-centric club that achieves success sustainably. He brings not only a track record of building impactful, dynamic organisations but also a genuine passion for football and the Southend United story.” Under manager Kevin Maher, Southend currently holds the 14th position in the National League. The team was unable to participate in last season’s play-offs due to a 10-point deduction, which was a consequence of their financial problems. In other news, the Shrimpers are evaluating the possibility of permanently reopening Roots Hall’s North Bank, following its temporary reopening for the recent FA Cup match against League One team Charlton Athletic. Tom Lawrence, the chief executive and a COSU member, has issued a letter to supporters, inquiring about their interest in relocating from other sections of the stadium to seats within the North Bank. The club has indicated that reopening this section of the stadium would entail “operational costs.” Lawrence further stated, “If there is significant support for it, we will finalise a revised stewarding plan and secure approval from all relevant stakeholders in advance of the game against Forest Green Rovers on Saturday, 23 November.”
