A Christmas tree situated in a town square has been substituted following criticism that its predecessor was excessively small. Numerous individuals voiced their dissatisfaction on social media, noting that the tree, typically the focal point of Alnwick’s Christmas lights display, was perceived as notably undersized. Northumberland Estates, the entity responsible for donating a tree to the town annually, acknowledged that the initial tree “did not meet everybody’s expectations” and confirmed it had “sourced an alternative,” which was erected on Sunday. Measuring 30ft (9m) in height, the new tree stands at nearly double the stature of the previous one. Kevin Nicholson, chairman of the Alnwick Lights Committee, which is responsible for installing the town’s illuminations, stated that the original tree had drawn a “lot of negative comments.” Nicholson commented: “We are really grateful to the Duke of Northumberland for providing us with this new magnificent tree so I hope people in Alnwick will be pleased with it.” He further noted, “It’s been a lot of extra work as we we’ve got this one to decorate again.” David Fletcher, observed during a walk through the Market Square, described the new tree as “much better.” He additionally remarked, “It’s a big improvement on the previous one anyhow.” Olivia Cavanagh, manager of The Pig in Muck bar, indicated that some customers had made light-hearted comments regarding the original tree’s dimensions. “So it’s great to see that lovely one they’ve just put up,” she stated, adding: “We are so grateful to those volunteers who make Alnwick look amazing, the Christmas light switch on is our busiest night of the year.” Gordon Castle, President of the Alnwick Lights Committee and an Alnwick Conservative councillor, commented: “The old tree was a bit small in its context, that’s the worst you can say.” He concluded, “The new one is a present to the town, so let’s get on with having a fine Christmas starting with a fine tree.”
