Alice Capsey secured her inaugural five-wicket haul but was dismissed for a first-ball duck during the Melbourne Renegades’ low-scoring loss to the Perth Scorchers in the Women’s Big Bash League. This marked Capsey’s latest setback in a series of poor batting performances, having accumulated only 27 runs across five innings in the WBBL thus far, with a top score of 14. Capsey’s struggles with the bat commenced in October’s T20 World Cup, where she registered three single-figure scores, contributing to England’s group-stage elimination from the competition. The 20-year-old claimed 5-25 from 3.5 overs, with three of those wickets taken in the final over, as the Scorchers were bowled out for 108 runs in 19.5 overs. Capsey, who now ranks as the tournament’s third-highest wicket-taker, was subsequently dismissed by Chloe Ainsworth on the fourth ball of the Renegades’ chase, following Courtney Webb’s dismissal on the third ball. The Renegades were ultimately bowled out for 106 on the final ball of their innings, having now lost three of their five games. The Scorchers, conversely, have won three of their four matches. Both teams are scheduled for their next fixture on Saturday; the Scorchers will compete against the Hobart Hurricanes at 23:10 GMT, while the Renegades will play the Melbourne Stars at 04:00 GMT.
