German tennis player Alexander Zverev secured his inaugural Paris Masters title by defeating local contender Ugo Humbert in straight sets. Both players had previously won two of their four finals this year. On Sunday, Zverev, who is now the world number two, overcame France’s top-ranked player with a score of 6-2, 6-2. This victory marked his seventh ATP 1000 title. This match represented the fourth final of the year for both athletes; Zverev had previously been defeated by Carlos Alcaraz in the French Open final in June. The 27-year-old Zverev’s semi-final triumph on Saturday guaranteed that he would surpass Alcaraz, reclaiming the second position in the ATP rankings. The 26-year-old Humbert had previously caused an upset by defeating Alcaraz in the last 16 round at Palais Omnisports in Bercy. This led to his first Masters final appearance, making him the first French finalist at this indoor tournament in 13 years. The world number 18 stated, “I came as a kid to watch matches here and it made me want to do what I do, so I’m very happy to have reached the final.” Humbert opened the match by holding his serve with an impressive forehand passing shot, but Zverev quickly asserted dominance, securing a break in the third game. Zverev extended his lead to 4-1 with a second consecutive break, subsequently closing out the first set. He committed only four unforced errors compared to Humbert’s 17. The second set began with Humbert committing a double fault, which resulted in another break for Zverev. The German player maintained pressure on Humbert through his powerful serve and formidable groundstrokes. Humbert managed to win only five points on return during the entire match. Zverev then served out the match to secure his second Masters trophy of the current season, following his win on clay in Rome in May. This achievement propelled the German past world number one Jannik Sinner in terms of total victories this year, reaching 66 wins. His next competition will be the ATP Finals in Turin, scheduled from 10-17 November, where he will seek his third title at the season-ending event. In the doubles final, the pairing of Briton Lloyd Glasspool and Adam Pavlasek experienced a close defeat against the sixth-seeded team of Wesley Koolhof and Nikola Mektic. The duo, both former world number ones, triumphed with scores of 3-6, 6-3, 10-5, securing their fifth title of the season. This victory prevented Glasspool and the Czech player Pavlasek from winning in their debut tournament as a team.
