Alex Edwards, a pivotal member of the renowned ‘Turnbull’s Tornadoes’ Hibernian squad of the 1970s, has passed away at the age of 78. The winger secured the Scottish Cup with his hometown team Dunfermline before Eddie Turnbull brought him to Hibs in 1971. Edwards accumulated 215 appearances for the Easter Road club, netting 12 goals, and lifted the League Cup in 1972 after a standout performance in the 2-1 final victory against Celtic. He also participated in the 7-0 New Year’s derby demolition of Hearts and the 6-1 triumph over Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon in the Cup Winners’ Cup. After a seven-year period with Hibs, Edwards, who was inducted into the Hibs hall of fame earlier this year, concluded his playing career with Arbroath. “Hibernian FC is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of a true Hibs legend, Alex Edwards,” the club announced in a statement. “He will be remembered not only as a brilliant footballer and a ferocious competitor but also as one of the finest players never to be capped by Scotland.” “Hibernian extend our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.” “Rest in peace, Mickey.
