An Albanian national received a nine-month prison sentence for cultivating cannabis, an activity undertaken to settle a debt owed to human smugglers who facilitated his unlawful entry into the United Kingdom. Izmir Dema, aged 26, tried to escape during a police raid on a residence in Birtley, Gateshead, in September, as revealed at Newcastle Crown Court. Law enforcement discovered numerous mature cannabis plants across multiple rooms, which Mr. Dema was tending. Mr. Dema pleaded guilty to producing cannabis. Judge Advocate Thomas Mitchell stated that Dema faces potential deportation upon the conclusion of his jail term. According to court proceedings, Northumbria Police uncovered 55 mature cannabis plants and 104 cuttings during a raid on a two-storey property located on North Dene on September 18. The court was informed that as officers gained entry through the front door, Dema fled through the rear of the property, attempting to climb over a garden fence to escape. Dema had initially entered the UK unlawfully in 2020, was subsequently deported, and then re-entered the country in 2023. He had accumulated a debt to the human smugglers and was engaged in work at the cannabis cultivation site to settle this obligation, the court heard. Judge Advocate Mitchell commented that upon Dema’s release, he would be “likely to be at the mercy of the immigration authorities.” Post navigation Individual pleads not guilty to murder of 19-year-old mother discovered in car park Three individuals face riot charges following Sunderland unrest
