Former Newcastle United striker Alan Shearer shared his views with BBC Match of the Day regarding Saturday’s loss against Brentford. He stated that Brentford’s performance was exceptional, noting that [Bryan] Mbuemo and [Yoanne] Wissa completely overwhelmed Newcastle, and suggested they could have scored additional goals. Shearer expressed his disapproval, stating, “I don’t like the attitude of several of the Newcastle players.” He further commented that teams cannot simply appear for significant home matches and assessed their defensive performance as dreadful. He contrasted this with two years prior, when Newcastle was consistently lauded for their energy and pressing, observing a complete absence of such qualities in the recent game. Shearer emphasized that pressing individually or in small groups is ineffective, pointing out that no Newcastle player was within five yards of any Brentford opponent. He concluded by remarking on the absence of the energy that had been characteristic of the team a year or two ago.
