A charitable organization has encouraged older individuals to explore applying for pension credit, which would enable them to receive this year’s winter fuel payment. Age UK’s Bradford branch noted that its service users are confronting “unprecedented challenges” during the current winter season. Previously, the winter fuel payment was distributed universally to all pensioners to assist with energy expenses. However, in July, the government declared that the payment would transition to a means-tested system, becoming available exclusively to individuals with low incomes or those receiving specific benefits. Mark Rounding, representing Age UK in Bradford, reported a “huge uptake” in the organization’s services. He further stated, “We are bracing ourselves for a busy winter period.” He highlighted that within the Bradford district alone, 12,500 individuals are not claiming pension credit, a benefit that would entitle them to the winter fuel allowance. Mr. Rounding indicated that “pride” frequently deters people from making claims and encouraged individuals to inquire with their elderly relatives and neighbours about their potential eligibility. “It is really scary for older people,” Mr Rounding commented. He also mentioned that numerous residents in the region are compelled to make a choice between adequately heating their residences and purchasing food. He asserted, “These decisions put older residents at a greater risk of cold-related illnesses, including heart attacks, strokes, and respiratory problems.” “I visit our Age UK hubs where usually people talk about the weather and so on but it’s amazing the anger and strength of feeling people have about the winter fuel payment,” he remarked. The charity reported an overall 227% rise in individuals seeking assistance to access pension credit by the 21 December deadline, which is the cut-off for eligibility for the fuel allowance.
