A plan to construct affordable residences in Cornwall has faced criticism from a town council and a local councillor. Developer L James submitted an application for outline permission to build nine affordable homes on land situated south of Bella Vista at Sandy Lane in Redruth. However, Redruth Town Council and councillor Connor Donnithorne expressed opposition to these plans, citing concerns about the potential impact on the surrounding area. Despite this, a planning officer at Cornwall Council, who recommended the application be approved, characterized the situation as “finely balanced.” The Local Democracy Reporting Service stated that a meeting of the Cornwall Council west area planning committee is scheduled to consider the application on 11 November. Councillor Donnithorne remarked, “I cannot support development in this area given that it would have an impact on existing highways and would open this currently undeveloped part of town.” The town council unanimously decided not to support the application, based on the reasoning that the proposals were not consistent with the emerging Redruth Neighbourhood Development Plan. In contrast, a case officer’s report to the committee asserted that the need for affordable housing in the area outweighed any harm that would be caused by the development of the site.
